Resetting and Staying Healthy in Southern Maryland
Summer in Southern Maryland has a way of getting us out of our routines.
Late nights, Maryland crab feasts, ice cream runs, cookouts, weekend adventures and maybe a few too many meals eaten on the go.
And honestly? That’s okay.
A healthy lifestyle isn’t about being perfect every day. It’s about knowing when it’s time to get back into a routine that makes you feel good.
As we move toward fall, here’s your Southern Maryland reset, with a few ideas for getting back into a good rhythm while enjoying the community we call home.
๐ฟ Start With a Southern Maryland Fresh Air Reset
We are lucky to have plenty of beautiful places right here in Southern Maryland.
Take a walk at Gilbert Run Park in Charlotte Hall, explore the trails at Cedarville State Forest in Brandywine, or enjoy the water and scenery at Smallwood State Park in Marbury.
Looking for something different? The Indian Head Rail Trail is another great option for getting outside and moving without needing a complicated workout.
You don’t have to run five miles. A walk, some fresh air and a little time away from your screen can be a pretty great reset.
๐ง Get Back to Your Water Bottle
Summer has a sneaky way of making hydration an afterthought.
Coffee in the morning. Something cold in the afternoon. Maybe a sweet drink with dinner.
Try making water your go-to again.
Keep a reusable bottle with you, add lemon or fresh fruit if plain water feels boring, and make hydration part of your daily routine.
Simple wins count.
๐ฅ Bring Some Color Back to Your Plate
You don’t need a complicated detox after summer.
Instead, start bringing more fresh, colorful foods back into your meals.
Think berries, leafy greens, colorful vegetables, avocado, fish, nuts, seeds, beans and fresh seasonal fruit.
And yes, you can still have the crab cakes.
This is Southern Maryland, after all.
๐ฆ Keep the Good Parts of Summer
A reset doesn’t mean giving up everything you enjoy.
Keep the family dinners. Keep the weekend outings. Keep the Maryland crab feast.
Maybe enjoy your favorite crab dish alongside a fresh salad. Add some vegetables to the cookout. Choose water between other drinks. Take a walk after dinner.
Healthy habits don’t have to take the fun out of Southern Maryland living.
๐ด Reset Your Sleep Routine
Summer schedules can get a little wild.
Later nights, sleeping in, kids staying up later and weekends that somehow turn into Monday morning.
As fall approaches, start getting your sleep schedule back on track.
Try going to bed and waking up around the same time each day. Create a relaxing evening routine and give yourself a little time to wind down before bed.
Your future Monday morning self will thank you.
๐ณ Make a Day of It
One of the best things about living in Southern Maryland is that you don’t have to travel far to find something to do.
Pack a picnic and head to Smallwood State Park in Marbury.
Want to explore somewhere new? Visit St. Clement’s Island State Park in Colton’s Point and learn a little about Maryland history while enjoying the waterfront.
You could also head to Piscataway Park in Accokeek for beautiful views of the Potomac and the Washington, D.C. skyline.
Sometimes your reset doesn’t need to involve a spa or a weekend away.
It can simply involve getting in the car and exploring somewhere nearby.
๐งบ Shop Local and Eat Fresh
Late summer and early fall are perfect times to visit farmers markets around Southern Maryland.
Pick up fresh produce, baked goods, flowers or something made by a local vendor.
Shopping local is a great way to support the community while making it easier to fill your kitchen with fresh ingredients.
And let’s be honest, finding something delicious at a farmers market is much more fun than grocery shopping.
๐ What About Supplements?
You may see plenty of “fall reset” supplements making big promises online.
You don’t necessarily need a shelf full of bottles.
Depending on your individual needs, supplements people commonly discuss with their healthcare provider can include things such as vitamin D, omega 3s, magnesium, fiber supplements and multivitamins.
The important part is knowing whether you actually need one and whether it makes sense for your individual health needs.
More supplements doesn’t automatically mean better health.
๐ต Give Yourself a Digital Reset
Here’s one that doesn’t cost anything.
Put the phone down.
Take a walk along the Indian Head Rail Trail without scrolling. Have dinner without checking notifications. Sit outside at home and enjoy the evening.
You don’t have to document every Southern Maryland sunset.
Sometimes it’s nice just to watch it.
โค๏ธ Don’t Try to Change Everything at Once
Your Southern Maryland reset doesn’t need to involve a seven-day cleanse, a strict diet or an expensive wellness program.
Start with a few simple things:
- Drink more water.
- Move your body.
- Eat more whole foods.
- Get back to a regular sleep schedule.
- Spend some time outside.
- Reconnect with family and friends.
- Support a local business.
- Explore somewhere new.
That’s it.
๐ A Fresh Season, A Fresh Start
As summer starts giving way to fall, it’s a great time to ask yourself:
What’s one healthy habit I want to take into the next season?
- Maybe it’s taking evening walks at Gilbert Run Park.
- Maybe it’s cooking more meals at home.
- Maybe it’s finally exploring a Southern Maryland trail you’ve never visited.
- Maybe it’s simply making more time for yourself and your family.
Pick one thing and start there.
At U-First Health & Wellness, we’re proud to be part of the Waldorf and Southern Maryland community. We believe staying healthy should fit into your real life, your family and the community you call home.
So enjoy the crab feast. Visit the farmers market. Take the trail. Watch the sunset.
And make this next season a good one.
Here’s to staying healthy, exploring Southern Maryland and enjoying where we live. ๐
